Code

Late autumn night after the rain stopped. A single call came into the Orbière Regional Emergency Medical Dispatch Center and was logged as priority two. The caller was Aurélien Bastide, regional emergency medical oversight committee member—a man who'd been filing complaints about this center's triage codes for months. The ambulance worked through three earlier calls before reaching his address. His heart stopped on the hospital emergency ramp. Cause of death: aortic dissection, blood leaking from the torn vessel compressing the heart until it quit. Ask each of the five people on duty that night how that call's priority field came to be marked two.
