Eleven electroplating factories—places that coat metal surfaces with thin metallic films—pool their money to share a treatment facility. The wastewater they use and discard arrives every night to be processed in sequence. One night in June, night-shift foreman Son Ki-seok was found collapsed beside a treatment tank in the facility and rushed to the hospital, where he died. Cause of death: inhaling gas that rose from the tank. Something that should never have entered that tank went in that night. The logbook won't say who accepted the final delivery.

That delivery's file folder has the sample verification field blank. The envelope containing the receipt was in the drop box still sealed, with only the discharging company's name stamped on the envelope's exterior.
Son Ki-seok's Pocket Notebook and the Dust Mask He Was Wearing
The mask remained on his face as it was, straps still fastened. The notebook was in his jacket pocket, written with ruled columns by date.
That Night's Yard Access Log and Shared Mobile Tank Operation Journal
The final delivery's tank entered the yard at 22:35. It was driven by the discharging company's driver.
