The Uncounted
Late autumn night, the air inside the drying shed of the Antinos Island dairy plant swelled in an instant. Window frames blew outward, and inside, night shift foreman Stavros Kalergis was carried out with burns and scorched air in his lungs, then died at the island clinic. Two names were assigned to that building that night, but three bodies stood at the muster point after the fire passed. Count the five spread across the milking shed and drying shed one by one. On that night when the counter went uncounted, start with what made that room swell.
