The Vacant Slot
In the shaft of a mechanical parking tower attached to a downtown office building—the vertical passage where cars ascend and descend—parking facility safety inspector Kim Dong-ju was found dead at the bottom, having fallen. That night he had come out to verify a report that the shaft's safety gate sometimes failed to close on time, and was leaning in between the pallets—the platforms that lift and move vehicles—to inspect the shaft interior. The tower was still operating normally right up to the moment of the accident, and as he leaned forward, one pallet descended on command—but the safety gate that always stopped people and equipment failed to deploy that one time. Interrogate the five people entangled in this death and determine whose hand executed that retrieval.
