Sinking Time
On a night in early winter when the sea fog would not lift, Jung Man-ho—a diver with twenty-five years' experience conducting nighttime underwater inspections of submerged structures—was hauled up to the deck of a support barge moored at Haeryang Harbor's quay wall and collapsed shortly after. The cause of death was not drowning. He had been brought to the surface in one pull, skipping every planned decompression stop he should have made on the way up, and was pronounced dead roughly thirty minutes after being laid on deck. Earlier that day he had announced he would submit to the authorities the next morning a copy of ledgers he had been cross-checking for months from a labor-placement office. The dive-support barge remained in normal operation after the incident, and several hands had access that night to the deck control panel where the buttons to start and stop machinery were clustered. Interrogate the five people entangled in this death and determine whose hand pulled him up that way.

Im Ha-gyuLabor-placement office on-site grievance and safety-report handlerMid-forties. Voice low, sentences short. Recites intake-and-escalation procedures in order without hesitation, but to questions about what happened afterward cuts off with 'not my responsibility.'
Choi Beom-suBarge engine and retrieval-winch mechanicLate forties. Taciturn, but when machinery comes up his speech lengthens. At the point that maintenance personnel are cut while nighttime callouts only increase, the anxiety he has been suppressing seeps into his voice. More comfortable talking equipment than people.
