Operational Test
basement disaster-control and electrical rooms of an operational 1,200-unit apartment complex · deep winter night
Deep into a winter night, in the electrical room on basement level 3 of a 1,200-unit apartment complex, Jeong Hae-gil (68), auditor of the residents' representative council, was found dead. Above, residents slept; heating and elevators ran normally through the night. Cause of death: acute asphyxiation from high-concentration carbon dioxide inhalation—that night, the fire suppression system in the electrical room zone discharged its agent, and he was inside the sealed area. Management calls it an accident. Interrogate the three people entangled in that night's basement, and determine whose hand set this death in motion.

- Bae Si-wonNight Facilities EngineerEarly forties. Speaks little, answers only what's asked. Recalls times and figures precisely; voice nearly flat. Has the characteristic expressionlessness of someone whose days and nights have inverted from long night duty.
- Oh Sang-cheolNight Security ChiefLate fifties. Affable, talkative, knows everyone's business in the complex. But when regulations or liability come up, voice drops noticeably and words dry up.
- Kim Yeong-pyoManagerEarly fifties. Speaks tersely, bureaucratically, establishing management's position first. When asked about liability, immediately draws lines; even when emotion is called for, pivots back to paperwork.
Exhibits
Suppression System Activation Log
Activation log from the receiver panel—the control board that receives fire signals—in the disaster-control room, the control center housing monitoring equipment. One electrical room zone activation logged near midnight. Because of night-shift alarm response, operating authority for this receiver panel is registered to both facilities night staff and security night staff; the operator field displays only that shared night account, indistinguishable between facilities and security hands.
Night Patrol Terminal Tag Records
Tag records from the security night patrol terminal. Between 23:00 and 01:00, patrol tags covering fifteen ground-level buildings. The terminal logs only tagged locations and times; it doesn't record where the user was between tags.
Discharge Alarm Indicator Outside Electrical Room
Discharge alarm indicator mounted on the wall beside the electrical room door. Light is dark; dust settled on the cover glass.
